Went to the Riverbend Hot Springs yesterday and alternated soaks between the
three tubs - very hot, medium hot and just right. Not crowded so I was able to
sit alone and contemplate - what does it mean when a black dog crosses your path?
Poets think of such deep questions.
I did think of a poem when a heavy set man got into the pool and the water level rose.
Archimedes principle - if I remember correctly he got out of the tub and ran into town
shouting "Eureka!" I just switched to another tub. But that "Eureka!" - isn't that how
ideas come to you? I came back to my little apartment and worked on an Archimedes poem.
Leaving for Albuquerque later this afternoon and tomorrow (Southwest Air willing) I'll
be back in Buffalo.
off the I90
buffalo sculptures roam
the exit
I love them. Tried to find out more about them but google was not helpful.
Does anyone know how they got there? who made them?

Heard it was eleven degrees in Bradford last night. Ahhh.
Sunny and cool here - probably in the low 60s. We had
planned on gathering mesquite so we could cook ribs over
a mesquite fire. We set off up a dirt road into the hills around
T or C.
The desert has a raw, just-born sort of beauty. The colors
all in the dun, tan, manila, gray, brown range. Hollows
and hills, mounds, eroded gullies. The mesquite is gray and
thorny - thorns about an inch long and you don't want to argue
with them. It's brittle and snaps off easily and it didn't take us
long to fill a box.
The other plant just beginning to green up here is chaparral,
with waxy leaves that smell of desert rain when you rub them.
We brought our mesquite back to Starry Nights and
Monica revved up the cooker and laid on the ribs when
the fire was right. So fresh spinach salad, garlic potatoes,
and ribs. Quite a feast. And this morning, the courtyard
smells of mesquite (and my clothes too).
Heading for the last roundup here - driving to Albuquerque
tomorrow to meet up with poet Jules Nyquist in Old Town
who graciously is providing me with a place to stay. My
plane leaves early Friday morning and too soon I'll be back
in my boots and parka, shoveling.

BRIGHT AND SUNNY MONDAY MORNING
IN TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, NM
Feb. 24, 2014
I decided to call this blog Recycled Duds for two reasons:
1. I thought I'd post all those snippets that I'd started and never finished.
What seemed like a good idea at the time peters out after three or four
pages. What you've done is ok, but there's nowhere to go with it.
Sad that these barely born pups have to linger in the documents file
unread.
2. I love thrift shops. I love rummage sales, estate sales, garage sales.
These are places where I can afford (usually) anything I want.
I buy most of my clothes at these sales. Designer labels are mine!
So stay in touch over the weeks to come to read some duds and see how
righteous it is to recycle clothing.
New Mexico just happened to arrive as I was planning to start a blog so I began
here at Starry Nights but alas soon I will be flying north like the flock of geese
I saw yesterday, struggling to assemble myself into a vee (for victory) i.e. to
publish some of the manuscripts I've worked on.

STARRY NIGHTS
February 21, 2014 Saturday
Tee shirt in Truth or Consequences:
we're here
because we're not
all there
Just like a haiku (senryu)
Very sunny and about 70 degrees today. Going to the LaPaloma spa located right on the
Rio Grande (very muddy and brown at T or C) and seems small because there's an island
in the middle blocking the other half. The pools are 108 degrees, just warm enough and
there's a stand of giant reeds hanging over the river, rustling in the spiraling air.
I could live like this - writing all morning, soaking in the spa in the afternoon, going into a sauna for a steam, coming out, back into the pool. This has a hot tub beat every which way.
the sun is too bright
I come from a dark place
we compromise
This is sun block country, especially for those of us who have been living under Lake Effect
warnings for six months.

STARRY NIGHTS
Here I am in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, really. Arrived yesterday and wanted
to record the truth (as I see it, anyway, or face the consequences). After a four hour delay sitting the Baltimore airport, I arrived in Albuquerque as the sun set in a red line across the western horizon. Then a full moon came out of nowhere. Or so it seemed.
I decided to keep a blog because I am a journaling addict. I wanted to feature the things I love - poetry, haiku, especially, rummaging (recycling clothes) and recycling writings that never seemed to go quite as expected (writing duds). Great starts, usually, but no finish.
After a night at a Ramada in Albuquerque, my Garmin friend directed me to Route 25 south which
I followed all the way here.
speed limit 75
straight road lined
with white crosses
nothing ahead
behind me -
dotted line
rest stop sign
at LaSocorra
watch for rattle snakes
mountains
making themselves into hills
rock fall
Nogen Canyon
"gusty winds may be present"
or not
full moon
over Starry Nights
two weeks?
There is a thrift shop here called Paws and Claws (or something like that) - sounds like part of the Consequences. Will check it out.
When I figure out what I'm doing - I will even add pictures.
